The first book in this series, The River Goddess & Other Stories, introduces us to Alyssa, a young girl living in northern New Mexico who comes into her power with the aid of a mysterious River Goddess, whom she encounters in the arroyo near her home. Alyssa has always been able to communicate with non-human others—animals, plants, etc. This gift serves her well, as accompanied by the River Goddess, various helpful animals, and Rolf, a very old friend, she embarks on a series of adventures, each one bringing her closer to realizing just what she’s capable of.
In Starfriends, several years have passed, during which Alyssa’s friendships have deepened and matured. Now a little bit older, a little bit wiser, she embarks on a new adventure with friends and family. But this time the stakes are higher. It’s not just trees or animals at risk but the planet itself! An off-planet ally joins the team, expands Alyssa’s horizons, and becomes a mentor and new friend. Facing her deepest fears, forced to acknowledge her limitations along with her strengths, Alyssa learns to trust her heart and discovers more about how to be a good human and a true steward of our home planet.
